Largs is a seaside resort on the Firth of Clyde, with a Victorian promenade and famed for its ice cream parlours, gift shops and trips on the ferry across to the Island of Cumbrae with its town Millport.
It was here in 1263 that the Battle of Largs took place between the kingdoms of Norway and Scotland. The Scots were led by Alexander of Dundonald and the Norse by King Haakon IV. Largs’ most famous monument is The Pencil, situated at the south end of the Prom near to Largs Marina, was built to commemorate the Battle of Largs. Elsewhere in Largs, there is an interactive exhibition called the Viking Experience, open all year round at the Vikingar! which also incorporates a sports centre.
Largs is also famous for the Nardini cafe and restaurant. Originally opened in 1935, with its panoramic views over the Clyde, an Art Deco interior, and over 30 flavours of ice creams! Nardini’s Cafe was started by Pietro Nardini who arrived in Scotland with his wife Rosa from the town of Barga in Lucca in Tuscany in 1890. Largs is twinned with Andernos-les-Bains in the Gironde in France and has an active twinning association.
