ST ANDREWS EUROWALK

Postscript

In addition to the events commemorated along the route of this walk, St Andrews also experienced a raid by the German air force in 1942, during the Second World War. It was this destructive conflict which gave rise to the idea of promoting closer understanding and greater unity amongst the peoples of Europe in order to make another such war unthinkable. The European Movement was founded with this aim in 1948. Its purpose was to bring together a range of interests from the worlds of politics, the economy, education and civil society from across the continent. The idea has since given rise to the European Union of today.
